Actually more like the monkey bars. Trent broke his arm today.
He was at his cousin Trevor's baseball game with my Mother-in-law & Father-in-law. I didn't get the whole story until later but apparently he was reaching for the next rung on the monkey bars and slipped. My Mother-in-law called and I told them to head towards Akron Children's, I would meet them there with Callie & Ava.
Trent was very upset when they arrived and said he just wanted to go home. After calming him down and getting the x-rays done, we were told there was no break/fracture. I found this remarkable considering he couldn't even lift his arm. His arm was put in a sling for comfort, I signed all the appropriate paperwork, and we were headed out the door when I was flagged down by the ER doctor. The doctor felt something wasn't right and second guessing himself had the x-rays sent to the radiologist on call. Within five minutes two ER doctors returned and told me they had missed the fracture above his elbow. So they called the Orthopedic doctor on call and he put a temporary splint on his arm until the Orthopedic doctor can set it in a cast next week.

Where Were You?
I am always fascinated how people remember details of where they were and what they were doing when someone dies. My first recollection of this was when Elvis died. It was 1977 and I remember my mom and sister watching it on TV. Being the talkative 6 year old I was, I was instructed to be quiet! Elvis was dead and it was very important that my mom and sister take in every little detail of his death.
The next person I remember was John Lennon. I was at inside recess at Keene Elementary. The teacher had just blown the whistle for us to freeze so she could start calling us back to class. My best friend Jennifer McFarland leaned over to me and said "Did you hear John Lennon was shot?" I said "Who is John Lennon?" Jennifer said "You know the Beatle!"
Fast forward to fourth grade. Reagan was shot. I was in Mrs. Blust's class sitting behind Aaron Dryer. She wheeled in a TV so we could watch it. We were shocked, the President of the United States had some crazy man try and kill him!
I had just started at Ohio Edison and was in training when the OJ verdict was read. The instructers stopped the class and we listened to it on a radio that we found.
Probably the biggest event most people will remember is 9/11. I wrote about it in a journal I had started to record events for my kids, actually just Callie at the time. It was a beautiful day and I was watching the Today show with Matt Lauer and Katie Couric. I had just gotten on the treadmill when all the confusion began. I remember first calling Kevin who was working in Massillon and then calling my mother in law and telling her to turn on the TV. It isn't until later that you realize the impact a day like that has on your life.
Which brings me to today. I had taken the kids to Putt-n-Stuff in Orville. It a little after 6:30 when a college girl who was sitting next to me got a text message. She said "NO WAY, Michael Jackson is dead!" Oh C'mon, I thought, these kids have no idea what they are talking about. Besides Farrah Fawcett had passed away this morning, what's the chances that another one of my childhood icons has died. She changed the TV to CNN and there it was. Another "where were you moment" for me and the beginning of them for my kids.

Patches

Ahhhh we saw the kittens today.
It is going to be hard to choose because they are all so precious but I am pretty sure Patches will be joining the Rodgers Family. Crystal says he is the smallest and needs lots of love. I brought him home briefly today for a short visit and to meet the dogs, Shannon and Cinnamon. Shannon gave him a quick lick and Cinnamon gave him an all over sniff.

First Post
I , like I am sure many other people, have this crazy idea that I will write a book one day. My crazy idea started when I was in college in 1989. My freshman year I had this English teacher. She was in her 40's, she was in the Peace Corps. and she wore mini-skirts. How cool was this woman? Our assignment was to write a story about a factual life event. Considering my life was rather boring I made my whole story up! This teacher was fascinated by it. Told me she cried when she read it. Had me read it to the whole class. They applauded! So there it was, my first inkling that maybe I could write something that people would be interested in. Later I found out my teacher was smoking weed with some of the boys in class, so it took away most of her credibility, but I'm still holding on to my crazy idea. Until then, this blog may be the closest I get to it.
